Relative clauses
Defining and non- definig
What is a relative clause?
A relative clause gives more information about a noun.
It usually begins with: who, which, that, whose, where, when.
Example: The girl who is wearing a red dress is my sister.
DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE
Give essential information about the noun, without it, the sentence doesn’t make sense.
Example: The man who lives next door is a doctor
No commas are used.
NON DEFINIG RELATIVE CLAUSE
Give extra, non-essential information. The sentence still makes sense without it.
Example: My brother, who lives in Spain, is a teacher.
Use commas to separate the clause.
Relatives pronouns
who → people
which → things/animals
that → people/things (defining only)
whose → possession
where → places
when → time
Defining vs non-defining
Defining: Essential info, no commas, can use 'that',
Pronoun sometimes omitted.
Non-Defining: Extra info, use commas, cannot use 'that’, pronoun not omitted.
Summary
Defining clauses: essential info, no commas.
Non-defining clauses: extra info, use commas.
Common pronouns: who, which, that, whose, where, when.
They make sentences richer and more connected!
