1. Definition or explanation
   A biographer, someone who writes another person’s life story, must research carefully.
2. Punctuation (commas, parentheses, dashes give the meaning)
   Maria felt melancholy—a deep sadness—when she moved away.
3. Contrast or antonym
   Unlike his loquacious (talkative) brother, Carlos is very quiet.
4. Comparison
   The baby was fragile, like a delicate glass vase.
5. Example
   Celestial bodies, such as the sun, moon, and stars, are visible at night.
6. List or series
   The shop sells stationery: pens, pencils, markers, and other paraphernalia.
7. Cause and effect
   She was fatigued because she had worked for ten hours without resting.
8. General inference or logic
   He grabbed the leash, opened the door, and called his dog. Clearly, he was going to take the canine for a walk.
